Final Blue Effort - Winners

The winning team!
Alex and Spencer were a part of the winning blue basketball team from Medbury playing against Sacred Heart. In the C Grade Year 5 and 6 final Alex towered above others to rebound and score goals while Spencer contributed a number also.
The final score was a massive 28-12 win to Medbury.

Mrs Hickman mentioned that this was a fantastic improvement on the last outing against the same team where they only won by two goals, which shows the tremendous gain in skills the boys have made through commitment and focus.

Well done boys!

Ancient Egypt

This afternoon we started note taking about the daily life of a group of people in Ancient Egypt. We are learning to find main ideas, quote sources and put notes in a mind mapping programme called, Mindnode.  From there we will write a draft report in our offline "brick" draft book. When this has been conferenced we will use this information we have gathered to create an animation comparing this person to life of a similar person today.

Speeches Final. Wow!

Over the last three weeks we have been writing and presenting our speeches. The process was:

  1. Planning them in Mindnode (mindmapping application). See example (yet to be posted).
  2. Teacher Conferences for feedback and feedforward.
  3. Shared thinking looking at our burger speech writing poster and using Ultranet resources to help us understand the topic better. Thinking about TEE (Topic, Example, Explanation)
  4. Deciding what the rubric would look like and at what level a pupil could earn the "Expert" badge.
  5. Writing the draft in our "Brick" draft writing book.
  6. Conferencing this 2-3 times with teacher and or peers.
  7. Writing up the finalised draft in our online draft book.
  8. Further conference and tweaking with teacher.
  9. Copy and paste to Pages application on the computer to put into columns and sepearate into speech cue cards.
  10. Print and mounting the speech cue cards.
  11. Practising our speech to the mirror, cat, parents, peers, sunshine any other listening object.
  12. Learning what it means to be a listening audience. Manners, respect and how to listen actively to give feedback.
  13. Presenting it to the class where we had two peers assessing the speech against the rubric we had created and another as the timekeeper. We then got our instant feedback.
  14. Final conference with Mr Grieve and the peer markers to plot ourselves on the online rubric that will end up in our forallrubrics journal.
  15. Selection of final three to class semi-finals. Spencer Maynard, Jun-Wha Shin and Ben Shand were in this.
  16. Semi final class speeches were held with class votes as to who would represent the class.
  17. Middle school speech final where Spencer Maynard and Jun Wha Shin represented our class.

WOW! What a lot in the process of making speeches! I was extremely proud of each boy's ability to write a speech of close to three minutes and then stand up and speak clearly. Some got the next stage with actions and eye contact. We really enjoyed each speech and, although only two boys were our class representatives in the finals, I thought that each boy in the class stepped up to the mark.

We will be posting the speeches to our blogs shortly.

Welcome NZ Quadbloggers

We are the focus of the NZ Quadblog for this week.

  1. Here is a link to the survey form we have put together for our buddy classes around NZ.
  2. Here are our class blogs for them to comment on. We have one class blog and then each boy has his own blog. Each boy's picture shows his interests.

Here are our current Quadbloggers blogs:

Quadblogging is where four classes join together to comment on and exchange ideas and look for ways to take the classroom beyond the four walls. Each week, one class becomes the focus of the other three classes and their pupils try to write comments on the blogs of the other classes.  Making good comments (poster here) is a Digital Citizenship skill.

This is our third Quadblogging experience. Some work better than others as it depends on how many comment pupils get from the buddy classes and any technical difficulties that you encounter along the way.

Birds v Formation

In Art we made clay birds. The process was: making two bowls in clay, joining them together in the shape of a mandarin. Then we added another smaller one for the head. We glazed it and it was put in the kiln.

Kos police Visit

Over the last four weeks we have been exploring KOS (Keeping Ourselves Safe). From understanding what makes us uncomfortable to STAR (stop, think, action, report) we are learning to be safer in the way we think and act. Constable Richard came and talked to us about abuse. In one picture you see us deciding, by moving to different parts of the room, what types of abuse match the scenarios he gave us.

What is uSpace?

In Ultranet, we have a application called USpace. So what's USpace????

USpace is a Application we add school buddies and friends and learn how to be Digital Citizens. One of the main goals is to learn who to be a person who thinks about others and personal online safety in a safe environment.  If you want a friend as a buddy in USpace you can do a Buddy Request.  Then, if your friend accepts the request than you became buddies in USpace and can exchange comments and access to profiles.

A Story Told

This afternoon we had three stories from a wonderful seventy year old lady. From the story about silver paper up the nose and how it got out, then acted out house that Jack built and told us about the boy who went to steal the chocolates while the shearing gang was in action. What a disaster but the dog was able to help.
We finished with two limericks.
Get your son to tell you more. Pictures by Sam.

Mummify a Chicken! Part 2

As part of our look into how culture changes and influences us we timetravel to Ancient Egypt.
Next minute.... the chicken has lost his head....

A Mummified Chicken: Part 1

Here is a picture of the chicken we are mummifying, two and a half weeks down the track. Thankfully, no rotting flesh. Remy, Ben and Jonti helped unpack the natron mix, clean, dry and weigh it.

Our headless Pharaoh Larry (name as voted by the boys) started at 1.599 kg and is now approximately 300 grams lighter. We know that humans are up to 60-70% water so we think the chicken may lose 700 grams eventually.
We then repacked it with a new mix and Larry is now sitting happily back on the display. We will look at him again in three weeks. Who wants Larry for the holidays?

Note: Always remember to wash your hands thoroughly after unpacking a mummifying chicken and then repacking it in its burial chamber!

We will post movies and a full write up of this later. Also check out our amazing "mummmy" poetry in each boy's blog. A visitor to our class exclaimed our thoughts were, "amazing poetry."

Exams are over.

We have finished exams and results are back with the boys. While remembering that exams are a series of "pressure tests", it was pleasing to note the progress was significant for a number of boys in writing and grammar understanding.

Our next steps as a class will be improving our proofreading and continuing to embed ITTM (I Think That Means), which is a comprehension strategy for reading, into our daily routines.

We are also starting to prepare our online portfolios for you to view at the next parent interviews.

Famous N.Z. Writer visits Medbury

Brian Falkner came to our school and took workshops with different groups of boys. Sam from our class went. Sam reports that they looked at story structure. You should have a start, turning point 1 and 2, and climax at the end. The author then spoke to all of the middle and senior school about his life as an author. He talked about how "what if..." was a great way to make up a story. He told us about how he got published while standing in the JFK airport in America. That was his big break! We then had a tasting competition that comes from one of his books. Here is his website.
